Take Home Library - Bank One, Barnes & Noble, Indianapolis Public Schools Education Foundation & WIBC |
CHALLENGE:
Over the past three years, Emmis Community Outreach has been involved with the Indianapolis Public
Schools (IPS) Education Foundation's Take Home Library campaign. Again this year, WIBC joined Bank
One and Barnes & Noble to continue building classroom libraries throughout Indianapolis Public
Schools. The partnership strove to enhance literacy skills among IPS students while also
encouraging the Indianapolis community to donate books and resources to improve the lives of
area children.
SOLUTION:
The Take Home Library partnership encouraged donations of new and gently used books at Bank One
and Barnes & Noble locations. The books were then given to kindergarten, first and second grade
classrooms in Indianapolis Public Schools as part of a larger effort to increase exposure of IPS
children to literacy materials.
A local radio campaign was utilized to educate the community about the importance of early
literacy skills and to involve listeners in donating to the Take Home Library. This six week
community-wide book drive began at a kick off party at Barnes & Noble. The event celebrated
children's reading and encouraged donations to help build Take Home Libraries. Also, messages
on the web provided a list of tips for reading to children.
RESULT:
This campaign is an illustration of how Bank One and Barnes & Noble were able to demonstrate
their commitment to the community above and beyond their daily work. Through this campaign,
they improved the lives of IPS school children through the gift of literacy.
WIBC was proud to join the IPS Education Foundation in this campaign toward improving early
literacy skills. WIBC strongly believes in the importance of reading and was honored to be
part of such a wonderful project. WIBC and Emmis Community Outreach look forward to continuing
to serve with Bank One and Barnes & Noble to support literacy programs throughout Indianapolis.
