CHALLENGE:
Since 1998, the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Indiana University - Purdue University
Indianapolis has hosted a high school math contest where students compete creatively to solve
challenging math problems. In 2004, Emmis Community Outreach was able to help IUPUI Math
Department and Roche take the contest to a new level.
SOLUTION:
In partnership to promote math, Emmis Community Outreach created the "Math Matters" campaign
that targeted students and their parents to increase the number of participants in the contest
while promoting the importance of mathematics in everyday activities. The campaign themes
endorsed IUPUI as a first-class choice for mathematics while positioning Roche, one of the
state's leading employers of mathematicians, as a supporter of mathematics in higher education.
RESULT:
Emmis Community Outreach was excited to be a part of such a successful campaign. "Math Matters"
won the CASE V District Award Program for Radio PSAs and Commercials for its creativity and
overall effectiveness. Emmis Community Outreach hopes to continue this partnership in order
to attain even more success promoting math and encouraging higher education.
