CHALLENGE:
Relay Indiana is a statewide calling system that connects deaf and hard of hearing persons with
an operator to facilitate phone conversations with the hearing community. Initial discussions
between Relay Indiana and Emmis Community Outreach revealed that there was a need for individuals
with hearing difficulties to be able to interact and work with businesses over the phone through
Relay Indiana's calling system. The solution was a multi-year, statewide on-air educational
campaign about Relay Indiana and how to communicate with a person who is deaf or hard of hearing
over the phone.
SOLUTION:
Campaign messaging taught the hearing community about Relay Indiana and how the relay call
system works for the deaf and hearing communities. Businesses that heard the message were then
encouraged to register their organization as willing to accept Relay Indiana phone calls.
RESULT:
As a result of the partnership, a database of more than 400 deaf-friendly businesses was
created on WIBC.com. This database is shared within the deaf community connecting the deaf
and hard of hearing with these businesses. The partnership between Relay Indiana and Emmis
Community Outreach established this link between the deaf and hard of hearing community and
the hearing community.
