St. Louis County Department of Health, National
Association of Counties, KSHE 95: Radon In Your Home |
CHALLENGE:
Emmis Community Outreach has a history of working with government entities to address such issues
as lead awareness, recycling education and much more. Through a unique opportunity working with
the state and multiple county government entities Emmis Community Outreach developed an awareness
campaign to educate the public on the dangers of Radon gas.
SOLUTION:
Emmis Community Outreach worked with St. Louis County Department of Health to secure grant dollars
from the National Association of Counties to fund an awareness campaign, educating on the dangers
of Radon in the home. Radon is an odorless gas that can be deadly if not detected and kills more
Americans each year than drunk driving, drownings and home fires. To educate the public, a campaign
of radio messages aired on KSHE 95 in St. Louis urging listeners to take action and test their
home for Radon. As an incentive to test their home, Emmis Community Outreach secured FREE Radon
test kits from the state and other local county governments. Listeners sent an email to KSHE 95
to request their FREE Radon test kit. These kits were mailed to each requesting listener along
with an information pack about the deadly gas.
RESULT:
Emmis Community Outreach secured 200 free test kits and ran out in just six days of a one month
campaign. An additional 100 test kits were obtained by the Department of Health. In an average
month, St. Louis County receives ten radon test request. In October of 2006, Emmis Community
Outreach raised that number to 300!
